Drill collars are thick-walled pipes that add weight and rigidity to the drill string. They provide the necessary Weight on Bit (WOB), reduce vibrations and ensure directional control during drilling.

What is the difference between a drill collar and a heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP)?
A drill collar has more rigidity and weight than an HWDP. It prevents string flex and provides stability close to the drill head.
